If the net
is slightly high or slightly low, as is frequently the case on public courts, it can dramatically affect your shots. For instance, if a tennis net is set just ONE inch (2.5 cm) too high it will have the same effect on your serve as shortening the service box by SEVEN inches? This makes it much more difficult to get your serve in. And of course, a net that's too low creates other problems - like unfairly getting aced! So always check the net height before playing a match.
NET POSTS
But why check the net at the posts since the height is fixed and
not easily changed? It's true that you can't easily change the net height at the posts.
However, it is important for players to know if the net height is significantly too high or
too low so that they can adjust their shots appropriately. For instance, if you know that the
net is several inches too high at the net post you will have to aim higher than usual on
your down-the-line shots. Or alternatively, hit more cross-court shots.
